Because we believe strongly in drinking plenty of water and keeping hydrated, we have developed our own line of hydration backpacks, known as Hydrarucks. To promote proper hydration, all recruits are issued a Hydraruck during camp in-processing, and are required to wear it at all times. We conduct spot checks to make sure that our campers are getting the fluids that they need while at camp.

We have outfitted the local Young Marines program with these useful hydration backpacks. They are woodland camouflage, have storage pockets, adjustable straps and reflectors. The Hydrarucks also have lumbar padding for comfort and wide shoulders to make wear comfortable. They contain a 2.0 Liter Microban Bladder to help inhibit bacterial growth and have a dual lock bite valve making them easy to use. If it’s easy and convenient to stay hydrated, more children will be properly hydrated.

Aside from proper hydration, protection from the sun is imperative. We use an SPF 50 sunscreen for all of our recruits. This sunscreen is waterproof and goes on “like paint”, but protects well. Parents should encourage their children to use sunscreen when they are home so that they develop healthy summer sun habits.

It’s hard to believe that it has been ten years since the Columbine Shootings. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were originally portrayed as outcasts who were taunted and bullied by their school mates until they couldn’t take it anymore, and then committed the heinous acts that they are now infamous for.

In reality, these children were absolutely unstable and dysfunctional. They glorified violence, hate and revenge. They picked on and threatened other children and posted death threats on their web sites. What is most surprising is how the parents never noticed that something was so obviously wrong with their children. How could they not have seen this coming?

This wasn’t a spontaneous decision; this was a masterminded plan that had been in the works for over a year. How the parents didn’t notice bomb materials in the garage and in the bedrooms is incomprehensible. How these boys never got caught filming their crazy, hate filled rants in the family’s living room at night is hard to imagine. What’s even more interesting is that these boys didn’t seem the slightest bit concerned about getting caught by their parents. If it were me, I would have been terrified that my mother or father might come out of their room to get a drink of water… or something?

We hope that this tragedy is not without some benefit or lesson learned.

Watch your children. Be involved with your children. Set limits for your children. Hold your children accountable for their actions.

And don’t allow another Columbine to happen.

One of the things that makes Reality Ranch a unique military summer camp is that we accept younger children. Sometimes, parents don’t want to wait until their child gets old enough to develop and reinforce bad habits, and they want to “nip these behaviors in a bud” sooner, rather than later. Often, being away from home and learning how important it is to develop a sense of responsibility and independence is enough motivation for our younger recruits to make positive changes while they are away at camp. They miss home, and when they miss home, you can bet that they will appreciate it that much more when they return.

That’s where Reality Ranch comes in. Our para-military summer camp program accepts children as young as ten (10), and children as old as fifteen (15) years of age. This narrow age range helps ensure that the interaction between campers and the activities that we provide are beneficial for all of the recruits that attend our military summer camp. Reality Ranch is perfect for parents who want to give their younger child a “reality check” and motivate them to succeed, without subjecting them to a hard core “correctional” program that is meant for older, adjudicated youth.

Reality Ranch offers a unique combination of structure and educational activities to keep your recruit motivated to learn. Our program is safe, structured and gets results.

We realize that writing an article like this can stir up a lot of different reactions. America is very opinionated regarding parenting techniques and some of the problems we are facing with today’s youth. And that’s okay. That’s what America is all about- having the freedom to think, feel and express yourself as you choose to. As camp directors, we enjoy the same liberties.

The youth of today have gotten out of control and are spoiled, ungrateful kids. The material things that were once luxuries are now expected and demanded. Parents feel immense pressure to fulfill these demands, to keep up with other parents who are similarly situated. In a sense, it can turn into a competition, and the only ones who benefit from it are the children who receive these big ticket items, without having to earn them or even show their appreciation. How many times have parents of today watched their child slam a video game controller in anger, and then watch them pick it up to continue playing the game? Allowing this type of behavior is encouraging children to disrespect the luxuries that they have and in doing so, they will never develop any appreciation for these items. Mistreating an item should result in immediate loss of the item, for at least a week. And that’s just for the first offense.

It’s amazing how a baseball bat or mitt that was a treasured birthday gift when we were younger is barely considered adequate to give to our children now. Birthday gifts are now mandated to be video games, ipods and other expensive electronics, which we grudgingly purchase so that our precious babes don’t have to “do without”. Even more shocking is the lack of respect towards adults that the youth of today seem to display openly, and proudly. Years ago, if you did something wrong, you would be punished by the adult who was in charge of you at the time, and then again after you got home. What happened? What has caused back talk and foul language towards adults to become acceptable? Why isn’t anyone doing anything to stop this? If we had said even a fraction of what children say nowadays to an adult, we probably would have been knocked into next Tuesday. Did you ever tell your father “No” or “Wait a minute”, when told to take out the garbage? We sure didn’t!

We are not advocates of violence, but we are advocates of parents taking charge of children, in order to prevent the continued deterioration of our society, and incidents like the Columbine High Shooting. We are advocates of making children earn their privileges, and earning their luxury items. We are advocates of selling these items on eBay when children don’t respect or appreciate them- and not replacing them. We are advocates of parent rights- the right to expect discipline, respect and obedience from our children. This is not child abuse; it is a parent’s right.

As parents, we know that whether our children are acting their best, or acting their worst, they’re still our children. Spending time away from your son can be difficult, especially if attending camp will be his first time away from home. The separation is usually more difficult for the parents than it is for the recruits. Reality Ranch strives to keep Ranch Parents informed about their children while they are away at camp. There are a few different ways that we accomplish this.

1.

Parents of camp recruits will be given access to our private “Ranch Parents Page” that will enable them to view periodic camp activity updates, pictures of the recruits at camp, camp alerts and other information. This helps keep our parents in the loop.

2.

You will exchange letters with your recruit while he is here at camp. Reality Ranch encourages parents to write while their recruits are away, to show them your support, and to let them know that you are thinking about them.

3.

Twitter updates! If you haven’t gotten into the Twitter craze yet, now is a great time to check out Twitter. You will receive occasional updates of camp activities and happenings that can be sent right to your mobile phone instantly.

4.

Call our office and talk to Major Denton, who is always glad to run down to camp and check on your recruit for you. She is available throughout the camp session by email and phone to keep you informed and to support you.

It also helps to keep in mind that while parents are at home worrying about their recruit and missing them, the recruits are kept busy at camp and are having a good time. The recruits do miss home while they are away, and this is a positive thing. We hope that by missing home a little, that they will appreciate their home even more when they return to a warm welcome.

Reality Ranch is not a “juvie camp”, but we do accept children who need some motivation to get on track. We believe that the common values and life skills classes that we offer at camp are beneficial to all young men, whether the road to adulthood that they are traveling on is straight and smooth, or has some twists and bumps.

We are the first and only military outdoor experience program to be licensed by the State of Arizona. Like most summer camps, we receive many different types of children each year. Some children have an interest in the military and want to experience what military life is like. Some want to increase their physical fitness level or lose weight. Others are encouraged by their family or teachers to attend camp because they feel that the child needs a wake up call.

Adolescent boys are exposed to social influences that often impact your family’s rules and standards. At RRMC, our recruits learn that their family’s standards are the norm, and that the rules in your home are what matter most. Parents and their children don’t have to swim against the current any more. We teach your son to take pride in his home and family.

Does any of the following sound familiar?

* He has been pampered or spoiled?
* Does not appreciate what he has?
* Lacks respect and self discipline?
* Should be doing better in school?
* Smart, but lazy?
* Needs to develop healthy habits?
* Is too much of a follower?
* Spends too much time in front of the computer?

You’re not alone. All adolescents go through at least one of these phases at some point. It’s our job as parents to help them overcome these challenges and ensure that they stay on the right track. Sometimes, it takes more than a well meaning parent to accomplish this. While the initial separation from your recruit may be difficult, a few weeks away from home can be beneficial for everyone. It allows parents some time to relax and re-group, and modify some household routines if needed, and at the same time, it allows our recruits time to grow and expand.

They get to experience independence and learn self reliance in a safe and controlled atmosphere, and leave camp with more confidence than they arrived with. Often, Reality Ranch is a young man’s first experience away from home for an extended period of time, and both recruits and their parents are often surprised at how well they do while away at camp, and how much they learn. You can learn about some of the educational classes that we provide by clicking here or feel free to click on any of the links in the top menu to learn more about Reality Ranch.
